Under the legislation, the definition of marriage in Australia is:

‘Marriage means the union of 2 people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.’

In 2021, 23,914 same-sex marriages were counted in the Census – the first Census since same-sex marriage was legalised in Australia.
