Almost 300 NSW GPs can now diagnose and treat ADHD

Almost 300 GPs in NSW who’ve completed NSW Health’s endorsed prescriber training can now diagnose ADHD and prescribe medication.

Previously, people in the state needed to see a specialist for an ADHD diagnosis, and GPs could only continue prescribing medication if a specialist had already started them on it.

Another 300 GPs are due to begin the same training next month.

Here’s what you need to know.

ADHD

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can make it difficult to concentrate, manage attention or control impulses.

Symptoms usually appear in childhood, and diagnosis involves a thorough assessment of a person’s behaviour and symptoms.

Until now, people in NSW have generally needed to see a psychiatrist or paediatrician for a diagnosis.

It’s estimated that around one in 20 Australians have ADHD.

Change

Previously, GPs in NSW could only continue prescribing ADHD medication if a specialist had already started the patient on it.

Nearly 1,700 GPs have also signed up to continue prescribing ADHD medication for existing patients.

Now, GPs who complete NSW Health’s endorsed prescriber training can assess patients, diagnose ADHD and start prescribing medication.

The program will fund up to 2,500 free GP ADHD assessments.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said GPs in rural and regional areas, where access to care “is a challenge”, were prioritised for the first 300 training places.

Free assessments could save patients up to $1,500 a year in out-of-pocket costs, the State Government noted.
