Public school teachers in NSW have reached a pay rise agreement with the state’s Department of.

It includes a 3% annualfor three years, including superannuation increases.

The agreement comes after around 60,000 teachers suspended classes on Monday morning to vote on a deal negotiated by their union.

From 9 October 2024, public school teachers will receive a 3% pay rise.

From 9 October 2025, this will increase by a further 3%. A final 3% pay increase will take place in October 2026.

Teachers will also receive an 0.5% increase to superannuation from 1 July next year.

Each year of the agreement includes a $1,000 cost of living adjustment payment for teachers. This comes into play if quarterly inflation increases by more than 4.5% in the year to March.

New “flexible” working arrangements have also been agreed to, which the union said will particularly support women, who make up around 80% of teachers in the state.

Teachers will also have more days per year dedicated to professional development.

Response

Education Minister for NSW Prue Car said “pay is a function of respect,” and that “better conditions and work-life balance will help us to attract new teachers and ensure those already teaching will stay on board.”

NSW Industrial Relations Minister Sophie Cotsis said the new pay agreement “recognises not only the important work of our educators” but also “helps address the teacher shortage crisis.”

NSW Teachers Federation President Henry Rajendra said the union was “delighted” with the agreement.
