The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has seized 2.7 tonnes of cocaine, the country’s largest seizure of the drug.

The AFP estimates the street value of the cocaine at $816 million.

On Friday, the AFP found the drugs hidden in “underground bunkers” at a western Sydney property, after it was allegedly imported through North Queensland.

Police have arrested two men over the bust.

Background

In May, Queensland Police found 40kg of cocaine in the water off a boat ramp in Midge Point, about 100km south of Mackay in North Queensland.

Police charged six people in the initial investigation, including for alleged possession of the drug and dealing with proceeds of crime.

Authorities in the Solomon Islands (1,700km northeast of Mackay) have detained a boat alleged to be associated with the import of the drugs.

Seizure

On Friday, the AFP searched a property and shipping containers in Londonderry in western Sydney.

They seized 2.7 tonnes of cocaine, hidden in tubs under false floors in the containers.

Police arrested two men from western Sydney aged 21 and 25, and charged them with possessing a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment.

Police will allege these drugs were imported through Midge Point.
