The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is reporting cold temperatures across Victoria, with no part of the state warmer than 20°C at the time of publication.

It’s Melbourne’s coldest 1 December since 1996.

On top of the cold summer temperatures, it is currently snowing in the state’s Alpine region.

Melbourne’s average maximum temperature in December is 24.2°C.

Currently, it is 15.7°C, around eight degrees below that.

In northern parts of Victoria, temperatures were forecast to be 10-12°C below December’s maximum temperature average today, with Mount Hotham reporting a maximum temperature of 1°C.

The BoM reports snow showers currently occurring in regions including Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Buller.

BoM meteorologist Daniel Sherwin-Simpson told TDA the last time the first day of summer was this cool in Victoria was in 1996, when the maximum average temperature was 15.8°C.

In 1987, the first day of December reached a maximum of 15.5°C.
