What’s the latest on Russia’s war with Ukraine?

Russian strikes killed at least 22 people in Kyiv on Monday evening (local time).

The strikes are part of what experts have called a “new phase” of the conflict, with Ukraine using drones in an attempt to regain territory seized by Russia.

It comes after Ukraine killed 21 people at a college in Russian occupied-territory, according to Russian authorities.

Here’s the latest.

Latest news

Earlier this week, Ukrainian authorities reported strikes across cities including Kyiv and Dnipro killed at least 22 people and injured a further 145.

The UN cited the Ukrainian Air Force as saying Russia launched 656 long-range drones and 73 missiles.

UN teams on-site said: “People were really terrified during the night as they were sitting in shelters for hours, listening to the explosions outside.”

War

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. UN data shows almost 16,000 civilians have been killed since then. Neither side releases data on the number of soldiers killed.

Russia also controls at least one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.

Last week, Russian authorities reported Ukrainian forces killed at least 21 people at a college in Starobilsk, a town in Russian-occupied territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin described this as a “new page in [Ukraine’s] series of crimes”.

Last week, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported Ukraine’s drone capabilities meant the war was entering a “new phase”.

ISW researchers said “Russian battlefield gains are approaching net zero,” while “Ukraine has re-secured an overall drone advantage”.

“Ukrainian forces are out-innovating Russian forces,” they said.

The researchers noted: “Russia will very likely eventually develop countermeasures to mitigate Ukraine’s advantages.”

Peace plans

A spokesperson for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said yesterday that the president‘s instruction is “to try and end this war as soon as possible.”

The spokesperson said Ukraine is “expecting a visit from an American delegation” and they are “preparing for this meeting”.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is “open for talks,” saying “we were not the ones to stop them”.
