The Federal Government released a new set of rules yesterday to strengthen protections against future attacks from foreign actors and cybercriminals. The rules will require Australian businesses to take “tangible steps” that will manage the risks they could face from external forces.

Last year, Optus and Medibank were subject to large-scale cyberattacks, which resulted in the release of personal data belonging to millions of Australians.

The rules came into effect immediately, with no legislation needed for them to be activated
