The NSW Government wants to ban all take-home assessments for Year 12 students due to the growing use of AI.
As a first step, the NSW Government has asked the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to immediately suspend unsupervised take-home assessments by the start of Term 4 in October.
This is when the next cohort of students will begin the HSC (their final year).

If NESA accepts, the suspension would happen at the same time as a broader review into how AI is affecting students' development.
"The purpose of schooling extends beyond producing an assessment task. It is to build knowledge, judgement, resilience, and critical thinking over time. If students rely on AI to bypass that learning process, we risk undermining both their education and the integrity of the HSC.”
