Three people and two suspects killed at San Diego mosque

On Monday (U.S. time), three men were shot and killed at a mosque called the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD).

Two teenage suspects were also found dead at the scene.

Police said they are “considering this a hate crime” until proven otherwise.

ICSD remains closed, and said it is “heartbroken by the tragic shooting”.

Here’s the latest.

Shooting

Police were called to ICSD just before 12pm on Monday (5am AEST), over reports of an active shooter.

At the scene, police found the bodies of three men, including a security guard.

They also found the bodies of the two suspects, aged 17 and 19, who are believed to have died by suicide.

Police were also alerted about a landscaper close to the scene who was shot at, but not hit.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said "because of the Islamic Center location" police will be "considering this a hate crime until it isn't."

Response

At an event on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had “been given some early updates” on the shooting, which he called a “terrible situation”.

FBI Director Kash Patel said “all resources will be made available assisting local partners” to investigate the incident.

ICSD announced it would be closed until further notice.

“My heart hurts at the loss of three innocent lives at the Islamic Center in San Diego. Three individuals ripped from their lives and families too soon. Young children, terrified and holding hands while evacuating the building... Gun violence and faith-based violence are epidemics in this nation that must be crushed," - Congresswoman Lateefah Simon, the first Muslim elected to represent California.
