WhatsApp users can soon chat without sharing mobile numbers

WhatsApp users will soon be able to connect without sharing their phone number, with the messaging app announcing this week that accounts can instead be identified by usernames.

The Meta-owned platform has also opened username reservations ahead of the feature’s rollout later this year.

Here’s what you need to know.

Usernames

WhatsApp announced this week that users will soon be able to share a username instead of their phone number.

To contact someone for the first time, you’ll need to know their exact username, as there will be no searchable directory or browse function.

Once usernames are enabled, people and businesses you message will see your username instead of your phone number.

Reservations

While the feature won’t roll out until later this year, WhatsApp has begun allowing users to reserve usernames.

The platform said small businesses, organisations and creators will be able to claim the same username they use across other Meta platforms to help “maintain a consistent presence online.”

WhatsApp said users will receive an in-app notification when usernames become available in their country.

To reserve a username, head to Settings > Account > Username in the app.
