The teen who plotted to bomb the Opera House

September 3, 2026

Producer: Orla Maher

A Sydney teenager has pleaded guilty to plotting a mass-casualty bombing at one of Australia's most famous landmarks, the Sydney Opera House, with plans to attack on the day of the Sydney Marathon.

Court proceedings have revealed just how far his online radicalisation went, right down to picking a date, a landmark and a reason. And because of the perpetrator's age and the nature of the crimes, this is the first time we’re learning about it.

On today’s podcast, we're unpacking how a 14-year-old ended up researching explosives and attack targets, what the courts will decide next month, and why authorities are so worried about what this case represents.
