Labor has secured a second term in South Australia with a landslide victory at the state’s election on Saturday.

One Nation’s support also soared across the state, with the party securing a higher primary vote than the Liberals. Around a fifth of voters ranked One Nation #1 on their ballot.

Premier Peter Malinauskas said on election night: “It’s very important that no one confuses [the] results as adulation… Instead, we should see it only as an invitation to continue to work our guts out for the next four years.”

Background

At the 2022 state election, Labor defeated the Liberals to secure a majority government with 27 seats in the lower house. The Liberals won 16, and independents secured four.

David Speirs took over as Liberal leader following the 2022 election loss. The party has since been led by Vincent Tarzia and current leader Ashton Hurn.

Over the course of the term, two Liberal MPs resigned from Parliament. Labor won the seats at by-elections.

Another Liberal MP became an independent in 2023.

Results

At the time of publication, Labor has increased its majority to 32 seats, the Liberals have won four seats, and One Nation has secured one seat.

On election night, Liberal leader Ashton Hurn said it was “a tough night,” and “lessons must be learnt”.

One Nation Leader Pauline Hanson said in a speech: “Guess what [Peter Malinauskas], I’m leaving you some landmines. They’re called One Nation members of parliament.”

One Nation is on track to record its best electoral result in nearly 30 years.

At the time of publication, polling data indicates three One Nation candidates are ahead in their seats.
