MPs from across the political spectrum have paid tribute to independent MP Helen Haines, who lost both of her legs in an alleged attack last week.
The member for Indi, who remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition, has been honoured for her kindness and friendship.
Haines’ alleged attacker has been remanded in custody and is due back in court in February 2027.
Here’s what some of her colleagues said.
Background
Haines was getting something out of her car boot when she was struck by a car outside her Wangaratta office last week.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said witnesses described the alleged driver “doing a U-turn to get into the car park and to ram Helen against her vehicle, then to reverse and do it a second time.”
Haines was airlifted to Melbourne.
She lost both of her legs in the attack and remains in a serious condition.
A 43-year-old man was arrested and faces charges including causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.
