The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has confirmed the votes in two seats will be recounted.
The south Melbourne seat of Goldstein will undergo a partial recount, following the loss of incumbent independent MP Zoe Daniels to former Liberal MP Tim Wilson. Daniels requested a full recount.
Meanwhile, the slim margin in the northern Sydney seat of Bradfield has triggered an automatic full recount. Liberal candidate Gisele Kapterian is ahead of independent challenger Nicolette Boele by eight votes.
Here’s what you need to know.
Counting
After polls close, the first step is to count everyone’s first ‘preference’ (i.e. the candidates that had a ‘1’ placed next to their name).
If someone reaches a majority (more than 50%) from the first preference votes, then that person wins the seat.
If no-one reaches a majority after the first round, then whichever candidate received the fewest first preference votes is eliminated, and a second round of counting begins.
Bradfield
On Saturday, the AEC announced it will conduct an official recount of votes in Bradfield.

At the end of the initial count, Boele led Kapterian by 40 votes. However, once the preferences had been processed, Kapterian led by eight votes.
The recount will include a new count of all the votes, a full distribution of preferences, and a re-examination of all informal votes.
An informal vote is one that hasn’t been correctly filled out, or identifies the voter.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Monday that the AEC had identified more than 100 informal votes cast by people at hospitals, up significantly from the previous election.
The recount began on Monday and is expected to take up to two weeks.
Goldstein
On Monday morning, the AEC announced it will conduct a partial recount in Goldstein. It will only examine the first preference and informal votes.
Liberal candidate and former Goldstein MP Tim Wilson was declared the winner by 260 votes over independent incumbent Zoe Daniels.
Daniels requested a full recount, which the AEC rejected.
This process will begin on Wednesday.
