Baby spinach used in Coles and Woolworths-brand salads and leaf blends has been named in a nationwide recall for products believed to be contaminated with unsafe materials.
A Federal Government agency is coordinating the recall, which also lists products from Fresh Salad Co (sold at Aldi in Victoria) and Riviera Farms (Costco) as part of the notice.
Why the recall?
The baby spinach products are believed to have been potentially contaminated with a plant material that has caused hallucinations, dilated pupils, and delirium.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the agency conducting the recall, has advised customers to return them to receive a full refund.
Almost 90 people in NSW had reported symptoms after eating the baby spinach products as of Saturday, with at least 33 seeking medical attention. There have been 20 cases that have been treated in Victorian hospitals, and 26 Queenslanders who have reported symptoms.
