Get to know Jeroen Weimar

Usually seen joining Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews during COVID-19 press conferences, Jeroen Weimar is the Victorian Commander for contact tracing.

Prior to working in Australia, Weimar spent a considerable amount of time working on London’s transport system, where he worked on a plan to integrate the underground, bus and overground rail, and major road networks.

Weimar was then eventually head-hunted by Public Transport Victoria (PTV) CEO at the time, Mark Wild.

After leaving London, Weimar eventually became the CEO of PTV, taking over Wild. Weimar started as acting CEO, before being appointed full-time. According to the Australian Financial Review, Weimar during his time in this role was “often stepping into the media breach as the steady hand to explain network congestion or breakdown issues” — these skills were later invaluable for his role as Commander of contact tracing.

Weimar remained CEO until the functions of PTV were absorbed into the Department of Transport in 2019.

Commander

After stepping down from his role in PTV, Weimer was called back during the first wave of COVID-19 in Australia to assist with Victoria’s response and by July 2020, was made Commander of contact tracing. His approach to contact tracing COVID-19 outbreaks was described as “military-style operational focus” by the Australian Financial Review. In an article about Weimar, ABC radio presenter, Jon Faine, noted, “he has learnt to be an excellent communicator and has a strong mastery of detail”. Wild further described Weimer as, “to work with he is a dream; trustworthy, hard working and extremely dedicated. The type of person you can automatically rely on”.

Now, Weimar and the Victorian Government face the greatest COVID-19 threat since the state’s deadly second wave last year, presenting Weimar with one of the biggest challenges since the beginning of the pandemic.
