Cold weather
Trump will be sworn in and deliver his inaugural address inside the hall of the Capitol building – the first time this has happened since Ronald Reagan in 1985.
The President normally appears on an elevated podium overlooking the National Mall, a long strip of land flanked by famous U.S. monuments like the Lincoln Memorial.
Trump’s team announced the last-minute changes due to extreme cold weather forecast in DC, with low temperatures, around –6°C, combined with wind chill.
Who will go?
Around 220,000 tickets to attend the ceremony were made available.
More people are expected to gather outside the official event to watch the event, show support for Trump, or protest his second presidency.
It will look very different to Joe Biden’s inauguration four years ago, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Few people were able to attend, and social distancing and mask orders were still in effect.
Politicians, businesspeople, and celebrities are expected to attend the ceremony, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Country singer Carrie Underwood and disco group The Village People, known for the hit ‘YMCA’, are expected to perform at Trump’s inaugural events.
Australia’s ambassador to the U.S, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, will accompany Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong as Australia’s diplomatic representatives.
Australian billionaires Gina Rinehart and Anthony Pratt are also set to attend.
What time?
The inauguration ceremony and address begins at midday 20 January (local time).
That means it’ll be 4am Tuesday in AEDT.
The ceremony and address are expected to last two hours.
