Physically punishing children, including smacking and slapping, is now illegal in Wales.
The new law came into effect on Monday and gives children the same protection from assault as adults. It will mean that anyone who physically punishes a child will risk arrest or getting charged with assault.
It has been labelled a “historic moment for children and their rights” by the Welsh Government.

Members of Welsh’s Opposition have criticised the law.
Welsh Conservatives’ spokesperson for social services Gareth Davies said: “The smacking ban is an unnecessary, unworkable and undesired law that was pushed through the Senedd [Welsh Parliament] by those who think they know better than parents.””The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child makes it clear that children have the right to be protected from harm and from being hurt and this includes physical punishment.” — Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford in a statement
