Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne will serve a maximum of four years and nine months in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in 2018. This is why, and what happened.
What happened to Jarryd Hayne?
Hayne was sentenced in aon Friday, after a jury found him guilty of sexual assault in April.
The sentence was backdated to take into account the nine months Hayne had previously spent in jail for the same incident. There will be a non-parole period of three years.
Hayne assaulted the then-26-year-old woman at her Newcastle home in 2018. This happened to be on the same night as the NRL grand final.
It was found that Hayne committed two counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The woman suffered injuries as a result of the assault.

The trials
The trial that ended in April with a guilty verdict was the third trial over this incident.
The first trial resulted in a hung jury. The second trial resulted in a guilty verdict andspent time in jail, but was freed after he successfully appealed the guilty verdict.
Since the guilty verdict in the third trial, Hayne has been held in custody while awaiting his sentence.
